BABA AND ME: KOLKATA INFLUENCERS TALK TO THE ‘PROFILE PICK’ON FATHER’S DAY

The special day to acknowledge and honour fathers and father figures in our life is here. Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month of June, and in 2025 it falls on 15th June.

Fathers come in all shapes and sizes – literally – and in all temperaments as well! Some are super coolif you hang out late while some issue a non-negotiable curfew time about getting back home and heavens help you if you dare to violate it. Some dads will not mind so much if you wear certain outfits while others will frown in disbelief and disapproval at your wardrobe and makeup collection.Same goes for the report card, your career choices, the special someone you choose in life – the list goes on and on.

But think about it, a father literally holds our world together with his countless silent contributions for you and the family. Often, he simply hides his own feelings – it could’ve been a lousy day at work – and will happily take you to the store to get the new pair of shoes you’ve been pestering him for. It could be rushing out for an essential med when you have high fever and the doctor has prescribed a new set of medicines to start right away. Or, it could be holding your hand in a firm grasp and helping you across that swiftly flowing stream in the mountains on your last family vacation. It may even be teaching you some essential life skills or sharing his priceless experiences of boyhood and student life over bowls of ice cream at midnight when the whole house is sleeping.

Each one of us who has grown up witha loving father or father figure around them has the fondest memories woven around him.You can count yourself among the lucky ones if he is there in your life right now.

Here’s the day to pause and celebrate your father and fatherhood – in your own way with the special man in your life. Need not be anything over the top. My own dad would definitely shake his head in disgust if I blew up a staggering amount of money for “celebrating” him and his day!

The Profile Pick spoke to some influencers on Father’s Day. Read on for their thoughts –

Shinjini Mitra – We’re going to Mandarmani for a day on Father’s Day this year. This year is really special because Baba does the planning and execution of family trips all the time, but this year I have taken charge of everything!Let him just take it easy and enjoy himself, why not?

Baba and I are friends to be honest, so the list of what I enjoy with him is pretty long. His capacity for spending time with his loved ones is huge. At the drop of a hat, he will ask us to get ready and hop into the car for a long drive across the length and breadth of the city. In a sense, his love for Kolkata has been passed down to me too. We may simply keep zipping around from here to there in his car, or we may make short stops to gulp down an ice cream or nibble on some Chinese snacks at our beloved city restaurants. Either way, I simply love these drives.

There is something utterly adorable about making reels and videos with your own dad. Here is a man who is never judgmental, never gets impatient, never forces his pov on me, never feels it is not worth is time and energy. The chemistry is perfect and I look forward to our collabs each time.

Debolina Mitra -I haven’t made any special plans as such for my father on Father’s Day. His priceless wisdom to me has been – If you cannot behave kindly with a human being take care to hold back from rude and disgusting behaviour either.  Even in a light-hearted mood, you must never indulge in behaviour that may cause hurt to someone.

Baba is forever encouraging me to learn newer things and I guess this is something that keeps me going. He and I love doing simple things together – we both love gardening, so we end up planting a lot of trees. We love sitting down to a nice meal and relishing it thoroughly. And, of course, we love one another’s company when we are out on tours and vacations. One of my fondest childhood memories is of Baba holding me up in his arms and us roaming the mela for hours.

Debanjali Mitra–We have planned a special home lunch celebration for him. Nothing like a private and close-knit group to indulge in your favourite place of all on a special occasion – and that’s what we plan to do. Baba has taught me the priceless value of accepting responsibility for things and incidents. I know this will help me all through my life. From a very young age, Baba also taught me the importance of running my own race and avoiding comparisons with others that always makes you jealous and insecure.“Each one of us runs a different race in life. So, getting worked up to beat others is pointless. Instead, carve your own path and keep bettering your own record every time,” has been his advice to me. Trust me, I believe in him and follow his words completely.

What do I love to do with him? Well, I love to spend quality time with my beloved father reliving all kinds of childhood memories with him.

Debanjali Mukherjee – We are going all out to indulge him and we are all setting aside everything to spend quality time with Baba on Father’s Day. I have tried to pick up his sense of wit and wisdom and his capacity for working hard with sincerity. You know what? I love our trips together to the bazaar to buy groceries for the family.  It’s deeply personal buying stuff for the family we love and so much fun! His capacity for inspiring me is huge and I must say that I’ve learnt almost everything of value from him. One of my all-time favourite memories is of my Baba taking our family to Nicco Park during summer holidays in school.
